Project 1: Definition of Education
Two main questions will guide your thinking for your first project.
1. “What is education?”
2. “What is the purpose of being educated?”
Your task is to define education, and use examples that illustrate your definition and that your audience will be able to relate to.
Process:
You may want to start by looking at the dictionary definition, but do NOT use the dictionary definition as your own. What is YOUR definition? How are you extending the definition? What are the cultural meanings of the term? What are your experiences with the concept?
You want to make the definition new by putting your understanding, experience and twist on the meaning. And to help your readers understand your interpretation, you want to use examples. Think of how the authors in our readings thus far have defined education and the purpose of education?
Developing a Thesis:
For this project, start your thesis by filling in the blank. I define education as _______. From there, turn the statement into a working thesis sentence, by removing ‘I define education as.’ As you progress in your thinking of education, refine that thesis into a revelatory statement. You want to develop a thesis that provides a specific way of defining your point, and reflects your examples.
Audience:
Your audience for this project is myself and your fellow classmates. You will be sharing your ideas during pre-writing and drafting activities and peer review.
Format:
Your paper should be 3-4 pages and follow MLA format.
