Project 3: Argument Paper
For this project, you are going to write an argument essay on a topic of your choice (related to education). Your topic will need to be approved by me. Think about what topic you want to pick; it needs to be specific and interesting to you – something that you want to work with for a few weeks. Do some preliminary research and see what information is available about your topic before you commit.
You will want to convince your audience of your point. When writing, think about how your audience would analyze or critique your argument. How are you going to create your own ethos? How will you bring logos and pathos into your project?
Process:
To help with this project, we will continue to explore the library databases to find research that supports your argument. You will need to include 4 sources in your essay (only 1 may be an online source). In class we will talk about how to work quotes in while still keeping your own voice. I want to hear what you have to say about the topic, not just what research says. This is YOUR argument.
You will also need to create a multi-modal argument on the same topic. What you create is up to you. Some suggestions include: a soundtrack, a storybook, a scrapbook, a movie, a shadow box, a visual advertisement, posters cut out into shapes, ect. You want to use at least 2 modes, think of what medium will be best for your argument.
Developing a thesis:
Begin with a working thesis, but as you progress in your thinking, refine that thesis into a revelatory statement. You want to develop a thesis that provides a specific way of defining your point.
Audience:
For this project, you get to decide who your intended audience is.
Format:
This project needs to be 4-5 pages in length. Included with this project is a 1 page cover letter that address what your topic is, what your stance is and who your audience is.
Questions to Consider:
Who is your intended audience? (You will need to be specific. ‘Americans who watch TV’ is not specific.)
How will you appeal to your audience? ethos, pathos, logos.
Why are you motivated about this topic?
What will get others motivated about this topic?
What are the counterarguments to this topic?
How should you organize your points and visuals?
Project Proposal
As part of your preparation for this project, you will submit a project proposal. The proposal should help guide your thinking of the assignment.
Included in your proposal should be the following headings:
Topic: What topic within education are you researching and arguing?
Stance: What are you arguing?
Reason: Why did you pick this topic and stance?
Research: What type of sources are you thinking of looking for? What type of ideas are you looking for?
Audience: Who is going to be your intended audience?
Multi-modal: What form are you thinking about for the multi-modal aspect of this project?
Questions: What questions do you have thus far for this project?
